Hunting for Hominid Fossils in Ethiopia's Afar Desert

The Afar region of Ethiopia has been dubbed the cradle of humankind due to the wealth of information it has yielded in the study of human origins. Sites from this region have yielded the fossil remains of at least 11 early hominid species. However, there are still numerous areas in the Afar whose paleontological potential is untapped. In 2002, Yohannes Haile-Selassie initiated a three-year paleontological exploration and survey of the North and Central Afar. He presents the exciting recent results and future prospects of this work.
